How to Be a More Courageous Leader

May 1, 2023 by Stacy Whaley — Leadership

How to Be a More Courageous Leader

The position of leader is a daunting one for people who lack the necessary confidence for the role. Becoming more courageous as a leader takes time and a concerted effort, but it is far from impossible!

While some people seem to step into the role of leader effortlessly, that doesn’t mean they didn’t do their research beforehand. All you see when you meet someone with a strong leadership presence is someone competent and charismatic. You don’t see the hours of work they put into leadership training courses.

If you need a few tips on being a more courageous leader, you’re in the right place! Read on to find out more.

What Does It Mean to Be Courageous?

Courage is the ability to look at risks and find the confidence to take advantage of them. Identifying a risky business maneuver and tackling it head-on is no easy feat. However, succumbing to self-doubt or anxiety while worrying about how things might go badly is no way for a leader to behave.

Strong and courageous leaders are capable of reassuring themselves and others that their view has merit and should be trusted. Courage enables and promotes better leadership skills and can inspire employees to better themselves.

Business is full of fear and uncertainty. A few missteps and the whole company could face disaster, but getting it right could lead to great success. Fear and uncertainty must be embraced and seen as the markers of opportunity to be genuinely successful.

Leadership Training

Acknowledging and recognizing fear without being overcome by it is the hallmark of any courageous leader. It’s not that brave leaders don’t feel fear; they don’t allow it to control them. A great leader is someone we can look up to, someone who might represent and embody attributes we lack ourselves.

Business owners require great leaders to ensure their vision becomes a reality. All organizations are built by people who didn’t succumb to fear when it came knocking. Success isn’t possible without having to stick your neck out on occasion.

Leading by example is a wonderful technique, keeping you on your toes while showing your team you take the work seriously. For instance, manage expectations by setting your bar high rather than telling everyone what to do with endless meetings. This is impossible to fake and will be appreciated by those around you.

We all know the lazy boss who delegates for ten minutes before putting his feet up. Hardly cause for inspiration!

Admiration and Emulation

There’s a reason we admire people who exhibit courageous personalities. We all understand how fear and anxiety can feel on a personal level. So watching someone operate under duress without letting it get to them is worth admiring.

A courageous leader sets the scene for the growth of everyone under them. This creates opportunities, no matter the person’s position within the business. Near such people, it’s only natural to try and emulate them.

It has been a packed couple of weeks, to say the l It has been a packed couple of weeks, to say the least! But so much fun!

First, I attended the annual Polka Dot Powerhouse Celebration conference in Denver, CO. It was an incredible few days of hearing from speakers, catching up with friends from across the country and getting inspired about all things business and life!

Then I also facilitated an all staff training with one of our clients, Northwestern Bank. And to top it all off, I spent the day at the Women's Business Conference and led a speed networking event.

Like I said, it was a packed week but it's truly what I love doing - networking, spending time with other entrepreneurs, and getting to work with awesome clients🤩🤩

As busy as fall can be, it is also an exciting time. It's the chance to start fresh and recommit after a bit of much-needed relaxation over the summer.

Even though it feels like the start of something new, it’s also the home stretch.

It’s hard to keep the momentum going after 9 months! Does anyone remember their 2022 New Year’s Resolutions? If so, you deserve a gold star.

I appreciate this time of year because it feels less of ‘well, it’s quarter four. What can we really accomplish before the end of the year?' and more of ‘Hello, Fall! New goals, new energy. We’re ready to finish strong!’

Do you agree?

What are you excited to recommit to for fall? Maybe it's a morning routine you let go of during the summer, or a professional goal you're ready to get back on track with.

Whatever it is, now is the perfect time to set an intention and finish the year strong!
