The Future of Leadership

March 14, 2023 by Stacy Whaley — Team Management

The Future of Leadership

Do you have just a boss, or do you have a boss who acts as a leader? The best and most effective bosses know they can get the most from their employers when they work to lead.

If you’re a boss, have you ever considered what leadership qualities matter most? What leadership traits matter if you want to be the most effective leader in the future?

When you consider the future of leadership, you need to know what traits you need to act as an inspiration and someone who has employees eager to work for them.

Read on to learn more about effective leadership and what leadership qualities are essential for future leadership.

What Is Leadership?

Leadership is having a set of traits and behaviors that help align others toward a common goal or outcome.

Leaders, whether a coach, department head or company leader, work towards achievement.

The leaders’ traits help to bring others together, so everyone works towards that common outcome. Actions, along with words, are what matters most for leaders.

What Traits Are Essential for Leaders to Possess?

traits-of-a-leader-fire-up-and-leadEmployees will work well for a leader they respect, one who is in the trenches and understands firsthand what the employees are doing.

Essential traits in today’s world look different from a few years ago. Today leaders need to be:

  • Collaborative
  • Accountable
  • Credible
  • Relationship builder
  • Flexible
  • Good listener
  • Humility
  • Empowering
  • Authentic
  • Consistent

The best leaders will act as role models to inspire those under them.

Changes in Leadership Over Time

The list of traits to describe a leader currently might look a little different than it might have not so many years ago.

Traits of leaders used to say things like:

  • Strong
  • Responsible
  • Demanding respect
  • Had their own ideas
  • Knowledgeable

Now, leaders need to focus on collaboration. A leader might not know anything, but they know how to seek out and rely on people with the required knowledge.

Skills for Future Leaders

Skills for future leaders are evolving as the current workforce changes. Future leaders need a long-term vision beyond just their immediate goals.

They need to work and inspire the workforce with ways to achieve that long-term vision.

Collaboration continues to be the future of education.

In addition to collaboration for the future, there are some essential things to consider for future leaders.

Many workplaces now have workers who are on sight and working from their remote locations. Future leaders need to know how to manage the culture of remote teams.

A changing mindset and showing empathy in the workplace will be necessary for future leaders.

Preparing for the Ever-Changing Landscape of Leadership

To stay relevant and effective as a leader, you must be prepared to grow yourself. Use the knowledge and skills of others to help your teams improve.

Model collaborative thinking and the growth mindset.

First, I attended the annual Polka Dot Powerhouse Celebration conference in Denver, CO. It was an incredible few days of hearing from speakers, catching up with friends from across the country and getting inspired about all things business and life!

Then I also facilitated an all staff training with one of our clients, Northwestern Bank. And to top it all off, I spent the day at the Women's Business Conference and led a speed networking event.

Like I said, it was a packed week but it's truly what I love doing - networking, spending time with other entrepreneurs, and getting to work with awesome clients🤩🤩

As busy as fall can be, it is also an exciting time. It's the chance to start fresh and recommit after a bit of much-needed relaxation over the summer.

Even though it feels like the start of something new, it’s also the home stretch.

It’s hard to keep the momentum going after 9 months! Does anyone remember their 2022 New Year’s Resolutions? If so, you deserve a gold star.

I appreciate this time of year because it feels less of ‘well, it’s quarter four. What can we really accomplish before the end of the year?' and more of ‘Hello, Fall! New goals, new energy. We’re ready to finish strong!’

Do you agree?

What are you excited to recommit to for fall? Maybe it's a morning routine you let go of during the summer, or a professional goal you're ready to get back on track with.

Whatever it is, now is the perfect time to set an intention and finish the year strong!
